Fiber sends light down a glass strand run to your building. Cable sends a
radio signal down a coaxial line shared with your neighbors. For
downloading, at the speeds most households buy, you will struggle to tell
them apart. For uploading, and for consistency at busy times of day, fiber
wins clearly and structurally.

your address at a comparable price, take it. If it is not, cable is a
perfectly good product and you are not missing much on a typical day.

Fiber internet delivers your connection as pulses of light down a strand
of glass run to your building, rather than as an electrical signal down
copper or coaxial cable. That single physical difference is where every

distances, does not pick up electrical interference, and carries far more
capacity than the electronics at either end can currently use.

<h3>Is fiber internet worth it?</h3>

If it reaches you and the price is comparable, yes, take it. If it
costs meaningfully more, the answer depends entirely on whether anyone in
the house uploads. Video calls, cloud backup, working from home and
posting video are upload problems, and that is the one place cable cannot
catch up by buying a bigger tier. A household that only streams and
browses will not notice the difference.

Cable was built to deliver television, which is a one-way problem. The
spectrum allocation reflects that to this day: most of the capacity points
downstream. Fiber has no such history, so upload and download are usually
symmetrical.

For years that did not matter to most people, because households consumed
far more than they sent. It matters more now. Video calls, cloud backup,
working from home, uploading footage, hosting anything, and every device in
the house doing a bit of all of it at once. These are upload
problems. A connection advertised at 500 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up
is a very different product from one at 500 Mbps both ways, and only
one of those numbers appears in the marketing.

Frequently, in fact. Cable deserves a fairer hearing than it usually gets:

reason, and no amount of preference changes it.</li>
<li><strong>Your household is download-heavy.</strong> Streaming, browsing
and gaming are all mostly download. Modern cable handles them well.</li>
<li><strong>The price gap is real.</strong> A cheaper cable plan that meets
your actual needs beats a fiber plan you resent paying for.</li>
<li><strong>The fiber option is a small operator you have doubts about.</strong>
Network technology is not the only thing that matters; billing and
support are real too.</li>

<h2>What about fixed wireless and satellite?</h2>

Fixed wireless sends a cellular signal to a receiver at your property. It
installs quickly with no line to the door, which makes it genuinely useful
where wired options are thin, but performance depends on signal strength
and how loaded the local tower is, so it varies in a way wired
connections do not.

Satellite reaches places nothing else does. That is its case, and it is a
strong one where it applies. Latency is higher by physics rather than by
engineering choice, so it is usually the option of last resort rather than
a fiber alternative.
