How does fiber internet work?

The physical explanation is short. The interesting part is what it implies, particularly why fiber gives away upload speed that cable has to ration.

<section> <div class="wrap"> <h2>The mechanism</h2> <p> A fiber optic line is a strand of extremely pure glass, thinner than a human hair, wrapped in a cladding layer that reflects light back inward. Data is encoded as pulses of light and sent down the strand. Because the light bounces along inside rather than leaking out, it can travel a long way without meaningful loss. </p> <p> That is the entire physical story. Everything people like about fiber falls out of it. </p> </div> </section> <section> <div class="wrap"> <h2>What the physics gives you</h2> <ul> <li><strong>Distance stops mattering.</strong> Unlike copper, signal does not meaningfully degrade over the distances a residential network covers. Your speed does not depend on how far you live from the equipment.</li> <li><strong>Electrical interference stops mattering.</strong> Light is not affected by the electrical noise that couples into copper wiring.</li> <li><strong>Capacity is enormous and mostly unused.</strong> The limit on a fiber connection is almost always the electronics at each end, not the glass. Upgrading the service frequently means changing equipment, not digging.</li> <li><strong>Upload is not scarce.</strong> This is the one that matters commercially.</li> </ul> </div> </section> <section> <div class="wrap"> <h2>Why fiber upload is usually equal to download</h2> <p> Cable television networks were built to push a signal outward to homes. The spectrum allocation reflects that: most of the capacity points downstream, and upstream got what was left over. That decision is decades old and still shapes what a cable plan can offer today. </p> <p> Fiber carries no such history. There was no broadcast product to design around, so the capacity is simply split, and splitting it evenly costs the operator nothing. Symmetrical upload is not generosity. It is the absence of a constraint. </p> <p> Which is why <a href="/guides/what-is-a-good-internet-speed/">the upload figure is the one worth reading</a> when you compare plans. </p> </div> </section> <section> <div class="wrap"> <h2>The catch, and it is a big one</h2> <p> None of this helps if the glass has not been run to your building. Fiber is the only broadband technology whose limiting factor is civil engineering rather than electronics, and it was built out street by street over decades by dozens of separate companies. </p> <p> In our analysis of every US census block, roughly four in five residential locations sit in a block where at most one company reports fiber, so for most of the country, "which fiber provider should I choose" is not a real question.
